It’s summer! The days are longer, the weather is warmer. Is it getting hot where we live? Then we’ll need to think about safety on the steamy, sweaty days. When we all are outdoors working, gardening, playing sports, at the pool or beach, the park, or anywhere else where we'll be exposed to heat, need to be aware of importance of electrolyte balance.
Water and electrolytes are essential to the health. Fluid in our body contains things such as cells , proteins , glucose and electrolytes . Electrolytes comes from the foods and liquids we consume .
Each electrolyte plays a specific role in the body –
Sodium
Helps control fluids in the body , impacting blood pressure.
Necessary for muscle and nerve function.
Chloride
Help balance electrolytes.
Balances acidity and alkalinity, which helps maintain a healthy pH.
Potassium
Regulates your heart and blood pressure.
Helps balance electrolytes.
Aids in transmitting nerve impulses.
Necessary for muscle contraction.
Magnesium
Important to the production of DNA and RNA.
Contributes to nerve and muscle function.
Helps regulate blood glucose levels.
Fluids are found inside and outside the cells of our body. The levels of these fluids should be fairly consistent. On average, about 40 percent of our body weight is from fluids inside the cells and 20 percent of our body weight is from fluids outside the cells. Electrolytes help your body juggle these values in order to maintain a healthy balance inside and outside our cells. It’s normal for electrolyte levels to fluctuate. Sometimes, though, our electrolyte levels can become imbalanced. A number of things can cause an electrolyte imbalance, including:
* fluid loss from heavy exercise or physical activity
* vomiting and diarrhoea
* medications such as diuretics, antibiotics, and chemotherapy drugs
* alcoholism and cirrhosis .
* heart failure
* kidney disease
* diabetes
Common symptoms of Electrolytes Imbalance include:
* nausea
* lethargy
* fluid retention
Water loss (sweating) can lead to electrolyte loss. In addition to foods that are rich in mineral electrolytes, we may need to supplement with them. Salt is vital for electrolytes, but NOT refined table salt. It's been so heavily processed that it's stripped of all the trace minerals. We can use unprocessed sea-salt , natural tender coconut water , sports drink to maintain our electrolytes level .
