SA – RE – GA – MA – PA – DHA – NI or DO – RE – MI – FA – SO – LA –TI, these seven words can create wonder. Yes, they are the origin of all kind of music, which we enjoy. Our relation with music is from time immemorial. In each and every culture, community, religion, cast, creed etc music was there. It was influenced by nature, lifestyle, culture of local people, so has got different forms. But it is prevalent in each and every corners of the world. It is rightly said by Hans Christian Andersen (a Danish author); ‘where words fail, music speaks’.
MUSIC IS GOOD FOR HEALTH
Several studies have shown that music has a healing power. A study from University of Missouri shows that when a person is suffering from anger or depression, listening to music may boost your mood. A study with surgery patients shows that listening to music before an operation reduces the stress level. It works more promptly than anti- anxiety medication.
MUSIC AND FEEL GOOD FACTOR
Why listening music makes us feel good? When our desire is satisfied by eating, sleeping or reproducing, our brain releases ‘dopamine’ — the "feel-good" neurochemical involved when we experience pleasure and reward. Studies show that this same chemical is released when we listen to music also.
MUSIC AND MEMORY
Music is related to boosting up of memory. Studies show that even a person who is suffering with Dementia, listening to music helps them to recall some incidents. Patients suffering from Parkinson, Dementia or even Alzheimer benefits from listening to music. These diseases damage the brain chemistry, but music helps them to reconnect to the world and gain improved quality of life. Even mentally disabled people who find it difficult to learn new things, memorises easily when something is taught with music.
Music is inseparable from our life. In every sphere of life whether it is wedding, funeral, soldier’s marching towards battlefield, a graduation ceremony, a night on the town, our prayers, our mothers rocking the cradle, a romantic dinner, or any other event, music is there for us to express our emotion. It is the fabric of our daily life.
